How to frame a concrete basement half-wall which will be finished with 1 1/32'' bead board.
1) what do l need to do about water proofing and moisture barriers for the
concrete wall? 2) can l frame with ferring strips (1X3)? will
theysupport weight of bead board? 3) how do l attach the frame to the
concrete wall? - cannot reach ceiling joists because bead board will only
be 55 inches tall from basement floor. area above is already a plaster
wall
Use DryLock waterproofing paint on the concrete first. Then
rent or buy a RamSet. This is a tool that shoots special nails into
concrete using a 22 cal. blank. Buy 2 1/2 inch ramset nails & orange(#4)
loads. Use 2x4 is & run them parallel to the floor. Bottom one 1/2 inch
off the floor, top one at the point you want it & split the difference
with the middle one. Buy 1 1/2 inch blue Styrofoam sheathing & fit in
between these rails, they will lend support to the bead board. Attach the bead board using adhesive caulk & nails, then the base & ur top molding.
First, you need to seal the concrete wall with a concrete
sealer.
These are available at ur local hardware store or home improvement center.
Next, you will need to secure a ''nailer plate'' to the concrete floor.
This can be done with a concrete nail gun which is pretty cheap (about
40$), & can be purchased at the same type of place.
The plate should be a minimum of 2''x4'' standard lumber. Once you have the plate in place, determine how high you want the finished wall to be. Subtract 1-1/2'' from that measurement, & cut enough lengths of 2x4 to place one upright every 16- 24 inches along the top of the plate. This is not load bearing, so the placement is up to you, keeping in mind that you finish boards have to straddle an upright. Start on one end, & measure out the length of ur plate. Off of that measurement, put one upright at one end, & another at the end of the length of the 2x4. Once this is done, place the ''top plate'' on top of the uprights, & place the rest of th uprighs at ur set measurements If you need to run more than one length of plate, just double up the uprights where the plates meet to continue on. Hope this helps, it is easier than it sounds!
There is moisture barrier
at any hardware store.
Use concrete screws to
attach the frame. Also,
use a little glue. If it is a
real high moisture area.
(Something you can take off later if need be. Some glues stick for life.) It will keep the frame from warping & slipping. Bead board is as heavy as plywood. Make sure your frame has enough vertical slats. You need them to nail the bead board securely. You don't need to reach the joists. The frame with long cement screws will hold well enough.
use cut nails and construction cement (liquid nails) to attach
the furring strips.
